I agree. Germany take their chances and effectively play their set pieces. It requires a lot of training and planning, without being stereotypical about it, they do seem to think out their tactics well. Jens Lehman noted after his team's penalty shoot-out win over Argentina the level of planning that went into the possibility of the game going to that stage. He actually had his own personal notes on who takes Argentina’s penalties and how they take them.

Something I have noticed, is that they always take their chances. They don't need many chances to win a game. Look at the games against Turkey and Portugal for example...not that many clear cut chances but three goals in each!

My money is on Spain in the final. They are who I will be cheering for as well. Think they have played the best football during Euro 2008 and deserve to finish off the job by beating Germany.

Hi Vasanth and fweda,

I agree Spain are firm favourites but that may suit Germany. Then we all know how Spain will play and remember Germany found it difficuly against teams that were different and able to improvise their game (Croatia and Turkey).

Spain are similar to Portugal and play 'keep the ball', if you look at the posession stats for the Spain Vs. Russia game, they are remarkable -- they had 65% of possession. I don't think Spain will play differently then they already have, other than defend better than Portugal.

Also Low is very tactically aware and it will be interesting to see how he puts out his team -- two strikers that pose a constant physical threat ? Packed and compact midfield, that breaks down Spanish play?

But I agree Spain are the better team, let's just hope they don't implode in the final!

With players like Fabregas, Iniesta, Xavi and Senna working at the midfield, Spain are set to dominate the match with their passes which will create a lot of trouble to they German team but the Germany will be very dangerous on counter attacks especially with their stronger attacker with long German fun name. If i were to bet i would put my money for Spain. Best of luck for Fabregas and co.

I think this time Spain have what it takes. Man-for-man they are better than Germany, and they also have the cohesiveness they've lacked in previous tournaments, so I expect them to win it. It's long overdue.

[...] One prediction I got right was Holland not winning Euro2008 and even predicting accurately how they would implode. However I thought it would be in the semis and not the quarter-final match against Holland. No one can ever discount the Hiddink factor, as with Germany, fortune seems to conspire with him (well not with Australia in the 2006 World Cup). Then there was my prediction that Spain, considering the relative average age of the squad, would not have the mental resolve to beat Italy (as is the history with these type of fixtures.) Again, Spain managed to win that match on penalties. This tells me that maybe, as widely tipped, this could be their year. Will they implode in the semis against Russia, as is typical with the nearly achievers like Holland and Portugal? Without doubt this match will be very different then their encounter in the group stages, and Hiddink will do his homework. It’s a very difficult one to call, but I think Spain will win this one, for the simple observation that unlike Holland they showed a solid defensive display against Italy and might be able to close down the attacking threat of the Russians (Holland’s defence was carved up by Russian play). Whatever they do, they will have to defend tight and keep their concentration, and maybe man mark Andrei Arshavin? Unlike the Dutch, they will have to prevent the Russians taking the initiative. Well that’s the observation of the Spain coach “We will have to play in a way which stops them playing and prevents them from counter attacking. We need to keep at them and give them less space.” We will see… [...]
